2013 Rally Australia 12th – 15th September

If you saw the TV coverage of Rally Australia you will know that 1) there wasn’t much TV coverage of the event and 2) there was lots of dust. Of course if you were there at Coffs Harbour in person to watch our round of the World Rally Championship then you would have experienced the action (and the dust) first hand.

It was a good result for Thierry Neuville to score 2nd Outright in the M-Sport run Fiesta WRC. He had been running in a strong 3rd place all event but some bad luck for Mikko Hirvonen, when his Citroen copped a puncture on the Power Stage, moved Thierry up to 2nd.

Mads Ostberg appeared to have experienced the odd mishap during the event. If he had been able to get a clean run he had the potential to have finished even higher than 5th.

Evgeny Novikov got his Fiesta to the finish in 7th place and it was still intact. This was an improvement on his effort at the 2011 Rally Australia where his Fiesta (or what was left of it) arrived back at the Service Park on the back of a tray truck.

Apart from the three Fiestas in the top WRC category there were plenty of other Fiestas running as well. These included Regional Rally Cars, R5, R2 and even the older ST model.

Rally Australia included a round of the Australian Rally Championship and that incorporates a number of categories. Amongst these it was pretty clear that the “Classics” was the most popular Category and there were four Escorts contesting the event. The best of the Ford crews was Mike Conway / Jenny Cole in a BDA powered 4 door Escort, finishing 2nd behind Neal Bates Celica.

2nd Thierry Neuville / Nicolas Gilsoul (Fiesta WRC #11)
5th Mads Ostberg / Jonas Andersson (Fiesta WRC #4)
7th Evgeny Novikov / Ilka Minor (Fiesta WRC #5)

In WRC2 the top three places all went to crews in Fiestas.
10th O/R Abdulaziz Al-Kuwari / Killian Duffy (Fiesta RRC #48)
11th O/R Yurii Protasov / Kuldar Sikk (Fiesta R5 #82)
12th O/R Yazeed Al Rajhi / Michael Orr (Fiesta RRC #35)
DNF Subhan Aksa / Nicola Arena (Fiesta R5 #76)

In Class 6 two Aussie crews brought their R2 Fiestas home to finish 1st and 2nd that Class.
14th O/R Stephen Turner / Daniel Willson (Fiesta R2 #99)
15th O/R Adrian Coppin / Tim Batten (Fiesta R2 #96)

Aussie crews also ran the older model Fiesta ST in Class 5.
